History
Greenville’s history began in 1786 after it was ceded by Cherokee Indians. Its namesake is uncertain – it was either named after one of the first settlers, Isaac Green, or after Revolutionary War general Nathanael Greene. It started small, but now is home to a whopping 547,827 residents in an area spanning 795 square miles.
Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, and even considered the bridge from South Carolina to the Blue Ridge Mountains, it became an attractive prospect to low-country farmers, planters, and livestock drovers because of its copious streams, rivers, and fertile soil. After the Civil War, it blossomed as a center for the textile industry.
For hundreds of years, the northern part of this county has been an area of rest for travelers seeking warmer weather in the south for the winter and cooler temperatures in the mountains for the summer. And it still provides this amenity today! You’ll find travelers from all over the country and even from all over the world in Greenville County.
Scenery
Like most of the upstate, Greenville’s scenery is as pretty as a picture and has a very relaxing and inviting energy that attracts many people. There are farms, mountains, hills, rivers, waterfalls, and protected forests. Its diversity offers something beautiful for anyone to enjoy.
There is an abundance of parks branching across the entire county. The largest and most scenic are Caesars Head and Paris Mountain State Parks. Caesars Head, located in the northwest part of the county, rests just below the North Carolina border and there you’ll find stunning mountain views and even a view of the city of Greenville if it’s a clear day. There are over 60 hiking trails, hundreds of cascading waterfalls, many primitive campsites, and 13,000 acres of preserved and protected land in this enchanting state park. The view from the highest point is truly unforgettable, especially at sunset.
Paris Mountain State Park is located in Greenville and welcomes you and your family or friends to come out and hike, bike, picnic, swim, and fish. You can even rent a pedal boat! In the fall, the park hosts “Music in the Woods” – a family and eco-friendly music festival showcasing local talents of all genres.
Running through the city of Greenville itself, you’ll find both Falls Park on the Reedy River and the Swamp Rabbit Trail. The former is a lovely park right in the heart of downtown’s Historic West End. There are botanical gardens, art installations, and a river that flows into a breathtaking waterfall. You can take in the view from the suspension bridge that’s always open to pedestrians. It feels like nature’s sanctuary even though it’s surrounded by a bustling cityscape.
The Swamp Rabbit Trail is a walking, running, biking, and rollerblading path that runs from downtown Greenville all the way up to downtown Traveler’s Rest for a total of 22 miles. This scenic trail is well-maintained and widely popular with all kinds of people. It’s a wonderful way to experience a beautiful portion of Greenville County.

Greenville is home to a large community of people who always have a festival, a park, a sports game, a parade, or a gathering of some sort to bring them together. There is always something going on in this county. It’s the perfect place for active, social, and kind-hearted people to live.
Fountain Inn has a great center for performing arts, Greer hosts a diverse farmers market, and Traveler’s Rest offers distilleries, vineyards, farms, and Cherokee Valley Golf Club – a highly-rated and scenic golf course.
