History

All the way back in 1791, Salem County was a product of Claremont and Clarendon Counties before it was absorbed into the newly founded Sumter District in 1800. From there, Salem developed from a lumber town to an agricultural town and then to a cotton town. Today it is still quite small – less than a square mile at 589 acres and home to only 122 residents – but widely known for its scenic location in the foothills as a gateway to Appalachian mountain adventures and lake life hobbies.

Salem may be small but has a lot to offer in regard to majestic scenery. Its location is ideal for outdoor activities, especially for water lovers. Lake Jocassee is one of the most beautiful natural lakes in South Carolina and residents of Salem are proud to call their quiet spot by the lake home.

Just to name a few, some of Salem’s marvelous waterfalls include Bee Cove Falls, Laurel Fork Falls, Lower Whitewater Falls, and Mill Creek Falls. Want to see all of them?
