History

Historical sites such as Long Creek Academy and Raines Mill serve as important reminders of the town’s rich history in education, religion, and agriculture. Founded in 1914, Long Creek Academy was a training school for Baptist ministers. Then, the teachers there began educating the local children until it eventually became a certified high school before its closure in 1956. Much of the community’s life revolved around this school as well as Raines Mill, which was built the same year as the school and played a crucial role in the town’s history. The mill featured a 40-foot water wheel that was used to provide Long Creek Academy with hydroelectric power. It still stands today as an impressive historic landmark with gorgeous stair-step waterfalls as its backdrop.
