History

Named after its founder’s ancestral home in Ireland, Newry was a mill town established in 1893 by Confederate Army soldier and Mayor of Charleston, William Ashmead Courtenay. It started as a tiny village built around the Newry Mill, a textile mill that was the first of its kind in Oconee County. A significant part of South Carolina’s industrial past, Newry is officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

Scenery

While not short on natural beauty, Newry is also known for its historical scenery. The Newry Historic District is an unspoiled textile mill village that includes the original mill complex with New England-style architecture from the late 1800s, post office, first church, and various other buildings that served as mill workers’ residences. Outside of its historic charm, Newry’s surrounding scenery is enchanting and serene. Located in what is known as the Little River Valley, its views include forests, rolling Appalachian ridges, and the lovely shoreline of Lake Keowee.

Newry has a newly renovated gathering place called the Newry General Store & Cafe, which is a safe space for community members that serves food and drinks, hosts events, and provides local produce, meats, cheeses, beer, wine, and locally crafted gifts for its patrons.
