Located just south of Jocassee, Tamassee is a small, 1.17 square-mile town in the northwestern part of Oconee County, with an estimated population of 100+. Set in the scenic foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Tamassee’s natural beauty and close-knit community make it a favorable place to call home. 

History

Originally a Cherokee village, the name Tamassee means “Place of the sunlight of God.” It was one of many Cherokee settlements in the area, but was briefly abandoned when the Creek tribe made violent threats against them in 1752. However, by 1770, the Cherokee returned, and Tamassee once again controlled the settlement there. In 1776, they allied with the British during the American Revolution. A significant battle known as the “Ring Fight” took place in this area, during which Major Andrew Pickens and his men fought the Cherokee and the British Loyalists, driving them out of Tamassee and then destroying the village. Today, a historical marker located in the Cheohee Valley commemorates the original Tamassee Town.

Scenery

The landscape in this area is rural and agricultural, with scenic backdrops of the not-too-distant Blue Ridge Mountains, making it the perfect place for hiking, biking, and taking picturesque drives through winding, wooded roads. The Cheohee Valley, a gorgeous green vale surrounded by stunning mountain ridges, is the primary scenic feature of Tamassee.

Most of the Tamassee community enjoys the many outdoor activities this area has to offer.
