Just outside of Walhalla, you’ll find the 506-acre town of West Union. History

Around 1850, influential South Carolina politician, Colonel Joseph Gresham, moved to the area to form a temperance union.  He had already successfully started a union to the east, so he declared this particular part of the upstate, West Union. Post-Civil War, it was officially incorporated in 1870.

Its most significant historical marker commemorates the notable educational establishment of the West Union Grammar School in 1922.  The education system drastically improved after this school was built and marked the beginning of a new, more developed West Union.
